  • This announcement is sequel to the recent adoption of briefs of arguments from all parties involved

The Supreme Court has announced that it will deliver judgment on the gubernatorial dispute in Nasarawa State on Friday, January 19th.

David Ombugadu, the gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, had approached the apex court to challenge the victory of Governor Abdullahi Sule of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Mallam Ali Abare, a media aide to Governor Sule, confirmed the news in a statement on Thursday, citing reliable sources.

This announcement is sequel to the recent adoption of briefs of arguments from all parties involved, with the Supreme Court reserving judgment to a later date.

Osun gubernatorial election and a state’s peculiar theatrics

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, had declared APC’s Sule, the winner of the gubernatorial election held on March 18, 2023.

Unhappy with the results, PDP’s Ombugadu filed a petition at the Election Tribunal, which was granted on October 2nd.

Governor Sule contested the Tribunal’s decision, seeking redress at the Appeal Court. The Appellate Court eventually vacate the Tribunal’s judgment and upheld Sule’s victory at the poll.

Recall that leaders of both political parties recently signed a fresh peace accord in anticipation of the Supreme Court judgment.

The signing ceremony took place at the state Police Command Headquarters in Lafia, where the Commissioner of Police, CP Umar Shehu Nadada, pledged to deal decisively with anyone who foments any form of trouble before, during, and after the judgment
