X Enhances User Experience with Audio and Video Call Features on Android

The social network X, formerly known as Twitter, has introduced the ability for users to make audio and video calls directly from the app on Android devices.

Following an app update, Android users can now seamlessly access these new communication features, as shared by one of the X engineers working on the project.

X CEO, Linda Yaccarino, initially outlined plans to introduce video conversations to the platform in August 2023. The functionality was made available to iOS users in October, marking a step forward in the platform’s evolution.

It’s worth noting that while any user can initiate calls, they are exclusive to paying subscribers. This addition joins a range of X features reserved for premium customers.

Earlier in the month, X removed the option for premium users to set an NFT as their profile photo, emphasizing the platform’s commitment to refining its user experience.

Users can control calling settings through the app: Settings > Privacy and Safety > Direct Messages > Enabling both video and audio calling. The same menu allows users to manage who can call them, including contacts in their address book, users they follow, and verified users. Users have the flexibility to choose multiple options from these categories.

X remains committed to being an “everything app.” The company recently unveiled its vision for 2024, introducing features such as peer-to-peer payments, new xAI-powered functions like “show dissimilar posts,” and additional advertising solutions for marketers.

Despite its ambitions, reports suggest advertisers are redirecting their spending towards LinkedIn after an incident in November 2023 where Musk reportedly instructed them to “go f*ck yourself.” X continues to navigate challenges while striving to enhance its platform’s functionality and user experience.
