In a proactive effort to enhance the safety and security of its citizens, the Ogun State government has initiated a state-wide project to install solar-powered streetlights.
This initiative stems from recent incidents of vandalism, where thieves targeted streetlight cables and accessories along the Sagamu Interchange-Abeokuta Expressway. Security agents, responding swiftly, apprehended suspects involved in the theft, including one caught in the act of stealing a transformer.
Addressing the media in Abeokuta on Sunday, Mr. Oluwafemi Omisanjo, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Energy Matters, highlighted the persistent vandalism of government assets, particularly streetlights on highways in the state. This prompted the Dapo Abiodun-led administration to explore an alternative to generator-powered streetlights.
Omisanjo explained that the administration has opted for a more secure and sustainable solution, introducing a pilot scheme of solar-powered streetlights in selected areas of Abeokuta, the state capital.
The government plans to replace the streetlights along the Sagamu Interchange-Abeokuta Expressway with a solar-powered system, a move aimed at curbing vandalism and ensuring a reliable source of street lighting.
Furthermore, Omisanjo revealed that a comprehensive analysis is underway to assess the broader deployment of these newly introduced solar-powered streetlights, which will eventually replace the existing ones throughout the state.
By embracing solar technology, the Ogun State government aims to not only enhance security but also contribute to sustainable and energy-efficient urban development.
