Senate Summons IGP and Military Chiefs Over Escalating Insecurity

• The Senate has summoned top security officials for an interactive session next week to address the rising insecurity nationwide
• Senate Leader Bamidele expressed deep concern over incidents of killings, kidnappings, and violence in various states, prompting the motion

In response to the alarming surge in insecurity nationwide, the Senate convened on Tuesday, summoning top officials from various security agencies.

Scheduled for an interactive session next week, security chiefs will engage with senators to collaboratively address the growing menace, as mandated by a motion titled “Spate of Insecurity in Nigeria.” This motion, unanimously sponsored by all 109 senators during Tuesday’s plenary, reflects the collective concern of the legislative body.

Recent times have seen a disturbing escalation of violence, with increased incidents of killings and kidnappings reported in Plateau, Abuja, Benue, Ekiti, and other states.

Presenting the motion, Senate Leader Michael Opeyemi Bamidele expressed the Senate’s deep sorrow at the rising incidents of killings, kidnappings, banditry, and other criminal activities nationwide.

Bamidele highlighted specific incidents, including the tragic killings in Agatu local government area of Benue State, the brutal murders of eleven residents in Logo local government area of Benue State, and various kidnappings in the Federal Capital Territory resulting in victims being killed even after ransom payments.

The Senate is also acutely aware of the challenges in Ekiti State, with the recent killings of two traditional rulers and the abduction of primary school pupils, exacerbating the overall insecurity in the country.

Further noting the unfortunate bomb explosion in Bodija, Ibadan, Oyo State, claiming at least five lives and causing extensive damage to residential houses, schools, hotels, and religious centers. The Senate is also concerned about the ongoing violence in Mangu, Bokkos, and Barkin Ladi communities in Plateau State, leading to the loss of several lives.

In response to this crisis, the Senate has resolved to reaffirm its commitment by inviting security chiefs to an interactive session. The primary goal is to collectively find solutions to the pervasive insecurity afflicting the nation, as the legislative body remains dedicated to addressing and resolving these critical issues.
