  • Segun Sowunmi expresses deep concern over Nigeria’s escalating insecurity, condemning the recent killing of two monarchs in Ekiti State
  • Sowunmi calls on President Bola Tinubu to recognize the urgent need for firm authority and labels crimes without tribal names

Segun Sowunmi, the former spokesman for the Atiku Abubakar 2019 presidential campaign, has expressed deep concern over the escalating insecurity in Nigeria, particularly in light of the recent killing of two monarchs in Ekiti State.

Sowunmi, also a former governorship aspirant in Ogun State, characterized the situation as pushing Nigeria into a “form of ground zero.” He condemned the killing of the traditional rulers as “extremely provocative” and suggested that the perpetrators lacked a sense of culture or proper upbringing.

In a statement in Abeokuta, Sowunmi called on President Bola Tinubu to recognize the urgent need for firm authority to address the worsening insecurity. He emphasized the importance of labelling crimes for what they are, urging against assigning tribal names to criminal activities.

Sowunmi stated, “A crime must be called a crime; all this nonsense of calling it tribal names is dangerous.” He further addressed those receiving security votes at the sub-national levels, urging them to understand that the nation is on the brink of a crisis.

Regarding the specific incident in Ekiti, he called for a thorough investigation to identify and hold accountable all individuals remotely connected to the crime. Sowunmi emphasized the need for governors and other responsible authorities to devise a comprehensive framework to secure the nation and its people.

In a stern message to those involved in acts of violence, he stated, “There is no such thing as a highly placed personality in my book when it comes to killing people.” Sowunmi called on those with influence to intervene and end the madness that threatens the peaceful coexistence of the nation.
