  • Chairman of Gombe State Athletics Association expresses skepticism about Super Eagles’ performance, attributing their success to luck, not coordination
  • Former Gombe State Football Association chairman criticizes Super Eagles’ lack of coordination, questions midfield efficiency, and dependence on Osimhen

Alhaji Ahmed Shuaibu Gara Gombe, Chairman of the Gombe State Athletics Association, has voiced skepticism regarding the Super Eagles‘ performance in the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Despite a 1-1 draw with Equatorial Guinea in their first game, the three-time champions have maintained a winning streak, securing a spot in the semi-finals with a 1-0 victory over Angola.

Expressing his reservations, the former chairman of Gombe State Football Association (FA) is unimpressed with the team’s recent performances, attributing their success to luck rather than coordinated efforts.

“We are still wobbling but moving. We are moving by luck. There is still no coordination. If we win this tournament, the credit must go to God. The technical crew has no input in this team, and we are not scoring goals as it should be. We rely on Osimhen to score, but he is busy running up and down due to a lack of required services from the midfield,” Gara Gombe stated.

He acknowledged the standout performance of the goalkeeper and praised the defense but expressed concerns about the midfield and attack. Gara Gombe highlighted the dependence on Osimhen and questioned the team’s ability to handle situations like the near-goal against Angola, emphasizing the need to improve coordination and scoring efficiency.
