A former coach of serial African champions, Super Falcons, and the Golden Eaglets, Godwin Izilien is dead.
It was learnt that the coach died on Wednesday at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH).
The circumstances of his death are still unclear, as reported by Daily Independent. Izilien, who guided the Super Falcons to victory in the 2004 Women’s African Cup of Nations, was a prominent advocate for the growth of Nigerian football at the grassroots level.
The former coach, who had requested payment from Godwin Obaseki for his services to Bendel Insurance, also expressed frustration over the Nigeria Football Federation’s failure to compensate him for match bonuses totaling $12,000 over the past 19 years.
According to him, the amount was still being owed by the NFF 19 years after he led the Super Falcons to Johannesburg, South Africa, in 2004 to win their 6th African Women’s Championship.
Godwin Izilien said the NFF was yet to also pay his N2 million largesse approved by then-President Olusegun Obasanjo.
