  • The House of Representatives urges government intervention to subsidize 2024 hajj fares, making the pilgrimage more accessible for Muslims
  • The House committee on Muslim Pilgrimage will collaborate with NAHCON to review processes and strategies for affordable pilgrimage fares

The House of Representatives has urged the federal government to intervene by subsidizing the 2024 hajj fare, making it more accessible for intending Muslim pilgrims to partake in the journey to the Holy Land of Makkah.

During Thursday’s session, the House also tasked its committee on Muslim Pilgrimage to collaborate with the National Hajj Commission (NAHCON) in reevaluating processes and strategies to ensure that pilgrimage fares are within reach for intending pilgrims.

The call from the House stemmed from a motion presented by Rep Umar Shehu Ajilo.

Ajilo emphasized the significance of hajj in the Islamic faith, highlighting its rituals and the importance of visiting the Holy mosques and historical sites in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

He expressed concern over the high cost of this year’s hajj fares, which he described as “exorbitant,” reaching about N5 million. This amount, he noted, poses challenges for middle and low-income intending pilgrims.

Given the current economic climate, Ajilo stressed the need to review the processes and procedures utilized by the National Hajj Commission in determining the fares, aiming to reduce them and ensure affordability for intending pilgrims.

The motion received unanimous approval through a voice vote led by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen.
