  • Deputy Chief Whip Onanuga disappointed by initial negative reception to bill aiming to alter presidential educational requirements
  • Despite opposition, Onanuga remains determined, plans further consultations to advance bill advocating for higher academic qualifications for officials

Adewunmi Onanuga, the Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, has expressed disappointment regarding the initial negative reception to her proposed bill to alter presidential educational requirements.

The bill advocates for an amendment to raise the educational qualification for presidential aspirants to at least a “university degree or its equivalent.” It also seeks to elevate the minimum academic qualification for individuals aspiring to become governors, state legislators, and federal lawmakers.

Despite its noble intentions, some members of the House voiced opposition to the bill during discussions on Tuesday.

However, in a recent interview on Channels TV, Onanuga revealed her determination to pursue the bill’s passage following further consultations with her colleagues.

She expressed her disappointment with the negative emphasis placed on the bill during the initial discussions, noting that she had consulted with several individuals but perhaps not extensively enough.

Onanuga highlighted the importance of not undermining efforts to advance the nation, particularly in crucial areas such as educational qualifications for elected officials.

Acknowledging the need for additional dialogue and understanding among lawmakers, Onanuga emphasized her commitment to representing the bill again after conducting further legislative consultations to garner support from her colleagues.

The deputy chief whip’s resolve to address concerns and engage in constructive dialogue reflects her dedication to advancing legislative initiatives to enhance governance and accountability in Nigeria.
