  • The CAF has tentatively agreed for the 2025 AFCON to be hosted in Morocco in July and August next year
  • CAF President Patrice Motsepe refrained from confirming tournament dates earlier, citing challenges with scheduling qualifiers in January and February

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has provisionally agreed for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to be held in Morocco during July and August next year, according to a CAF official speaking to AFP on Tuesday.

Earlier this month, CAF President Patrice Motsepe refrained from confirming the tournament dates, citing the challenge of scheduling the qualifiers slated for January and February.

However, scheduling the AFCON in June and July would coincide with FIFA’s expanded Club World Cup set to be held in North America.

An anonymous member of the competitions committee informed AFP on Monday about the “agreement in principle” between CAF and the Moroccan Football Federation. The decision was reached with FIFA’s support after months of discussions, particularly intensified during the recent AFCON edition in Ivory Coast.

The proposed dates for the 2025 AFCON are July 20 to August 16 or 17.

Recent AFCON tournaments experienced rescheduling; the 2021 edition, initially planned for Cameroon, was postponed to January and February 2022. Similarly, the most recent edition, initially slated for June and July last year, was rescheduled due to weather concerns.

Qualifying matches for the 2025 AFCON have yet to commence, with a preliminary round scheduled for next month.
