The Imo house of assembly has called on Hope Uzodinma, governor of the state to prioritise in agriculture as an alternative to the current economic situation in the state.

On Tuesday, the assembly while deliberating a motion by Chisom Ojukwu, highlighted the severe hunger caused by food shortages and exorbitant prices.

Ojukwu emphasized agriculture’s crucial role in providing food security, nutrition, and livelihood to the populace, stating its gradual neglect leading to land shortages and hunger.

“Our primary and secondary schools in the state, used to have demonstration farms, and our teachers including the students used to find serious interest in farming but today, there is an obvious lack of interest in agriculture and farming,” he said.

“The lacuna created in not participating in agriculture and farming gave room for most of the agric and farm produce to be imported into the state from other parts of country.

“If agriculture is not immediately made a priority in our state, the consequences would be catastrophic and may lead to wide spread famine, diseases and societal collapse.”
