The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) has expressed deep concerns regarding the increasingly daunting operating conditions faced by manufacturers in the country.

During an interview on Channels TV on Wednesday, Segun Ajayi-Kadir, the Director-General of MAN, characterized the current situation as “particularly difficult,” with many questioning the viability of continuing business operations.

Ajayi-Kadir emphasized the additional hurdles confronting manufacturers in accessing fundamental necessities such as power, water, and locally sourced raw materials.

He remarked, “The manufacturing sector is facing significant challenges, mirroring the broader economic difficulties in the country. However, for manufacturers, the situation is especially dire. They must contend with competition from imported goods originating from environments more conducive to manufacturing.

“In addition to this, manufacturers must fulfill their obligations to employees, meet tax requirements, and strategize for growth. Operating in an environment where manufacturers bear the responsibility for providing essential infrastructure such as power, water, and sourcing raw materials, including those available locally, adds to the complexity.

“Consequently, manufacturers are grappling with the question of whether it is still feasible to remain in business amidst these harsh conditions. While challenges have persisted over the years, the current landscape appears even more challenging, prompting many manufacturers to reassess the viability of their operations.”

Ajayi-Kadir’s remarks underscore the urgent need for targeted interventions to address the multifaceted challenges facing the manufacturing sector in Nigeria.
