Highlighting the pressing need to combat unemployment in Northern Nigeria, Prof. Mohammad Sani Haruna, former Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive of NASENI, advocates for a strategic emphasis on technical education by the region’s governors.
Haruna asserts that temporary measures and interventions lack long-term viability and effectiveness in addressing unemployment.
He proposes emulating the Asian Tiger technology adoption model to propel the nation towards an industrial economy.
In his address at the inaugural convocation lecture of the Federal Polytechnic Daura, Haruna underscores the imperative for Northern governors to revive the tradition of craftsmanship.
He emphasizes, “Education falls within the concurrent jurisdiction, leaving Northern state governors accountable for revitalizing craftsmanship, vocational institutions, technical colleges, and polytechnics.”
“Short-term solutions and interventions are inadequate. Individuals must learn to sustain themselves within a conducive environment,” Haruna emphasizes.
He stresses the importance of prioritizing Technical and Vocational Education in the region, advocating for substantial financial allocations and political commitment.
Haruna advocates for early exposure to technical education, suggesting its integration into elementary education using vernacular language and practical demonstrations to demystify science and mathematics.
