Senate Urges FG to Recruit More Police to Tackle Kidnappings

• Senate advocates for recruiting more police personnel to bolster security forces’ capacity in combating kidnappings and other criminal activities
• Motion prompted by tragic abduction in Galadimawa, Abuja, leading to successful arrest of notorious kidnap kingpin, Samaila Wakili Fafa

The Senate has advocated for the recruitment of additional police personnel to strengthen the capacity of security forces in combating kidnappings and other criminal activities.

This call came after adopting a motion titled “Galadimawa Kidnap Incident Response and the Need to Urgently Enhance Security Measures in FCT, Nigeria,” sponsored by Senator Ned Nwoko (PDP-Delta) during Wednesday’s plenary session.

Nwoko, while presenting the motion, highlighted the Senate’s previous resolution on November 23, which emphasized the need for security agencies to reinforce security and address the surge in kidnappings in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The motion was prompted by the tragic abduction of 19 individuals, including Nwoko’s Senior Legislative Aide, Mr. Chris Agidy, in Galadimawa, Abuja.

Following the abduction, Nwoko promptly engaged the FCT Commissioner of Police, Mr. Benneth Igweh, who mobilized the Anti-Kidnapping team to secure the release of the victims.

The successful operation conducted by the FCT Police command on February 24 led to the arrest of Samaila Wakili Fafa, alias Habu Ibrahim, a notorious kidnap kingpin who had long evaded capture.

Fafa confessed to his involvement in numerous kidnappings in the FCT and its environs, including the abduction of Agidy and Mr. Sunday Zakwai, the District Head of Ketti Village.

Expressing concern over the situation, Nwoko lamented the untimely demise of Agidy and others at the hands of the abductors. Their remains were recovered and deposited at Gwagwalada Teaching Hospital mortuary for medical assessment.

Deputy Minority Leader, Mr. Oyewunmi Olalere (PDP-Osun), urged his colleagues to ensure the implementation of the resolutions to address security challenges in the FCT and across the nation.

In its resolutions, the Senate also urged the Inspector-General of Police to intensify security patrols and surveillance within Abuja and nationwide to prevent further kidnappings.
