Speaking at The Punch’s 50th anniversary lecture in Lagos, Soyinka highlighted the pressing need to address the nation’s unity amid growing concerns of marginalization.
In his address titled “Recovering the Narrative,” Soyinka emphasized the detrimental effects of marginalization on national unity. He proposed decentralization, preferring terms like reconfiguration over restructuring for clarity.
Soyinka lamented the tendency of leaders to disregard decentralization once in power, despite its recognized importance. He stressed the crucial role of nation-building and urged leaders to prioritize citizens’ entitlements in governance.
Decentralization, according to Soyinka, is vital for maximizing development and addressing issues like food insecurity. He cautioned against relying solely on palliative measures and advocated for ending the cycle of violence by empowering citizens.
The Nobel Laureate urged leaders to stop deceiving Nigerians and emphasized the urgency of decentralization, particularly in enhancing security and productivity. He acknowledged fears of national collapse but called for confronting the reality of informal disintegration.
Soyinka proposed clear protocols for national association, with dissenters encouraged to depart if unwilling to abide. He emphasized the need for genuine dialogue and action to address Nigeria’s challenges.
