Former Super Eagles coach, José Peseiro (MON), emphasized the sacrifices made by members of the senior male national team to bring joy to Nigerians.
In a recent statement on his X (formerly Twitter) account, the Portuguese coach expressed gratitude to Nigerians and the sporting press for their unwavering support during his tenure as the team’s coach.
“I extend my heartfelt appreciation to all Nigerians and the entire press for their consistent interest, support, and motivation towards the Super Eagles while I served as their coach. I urge you all to continue rallying behind your players,” he remarked.
Peseiro highlighted the dedication of these athletes, who wholeheartedly represent their nation on the field and make sacrifices to uplift the spirits of their fellow citizens.
“It’s crucial to recognize the commitment of the Super Eagles players, who take immense pride in wearing the national jersey. They make sacrifices to ensure your joy,” he stressed.
He further underscored the importance of ongoing support for the Super Eagles, particularly in facing upcoming challenges.
He emphasized, “The Super Eagles rely on your steadfast support, especially as they confront significant hurdles ahead.”
Following the conclusion of his contract with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) last week, Peseiro bid farewell to his role as coach, leaving behind a legacy of 22 months with the three-time African champions.
Peseiro oversaw 23 games during his tenure, with the team achieving 11 victories, 7 losses, and 4 draws.
In his debut year as head coach, the Super Eagles secured four wins but also suffered six defeats, primarily in friendly matches. Notably, his inaugural game against Mexico in a friendly encounter in Texas on May 29, 2022, marked the commencement of his tenure, culminating with a victory over Sierra Leone on June 18, 2023.
Following his contract extension in September 2023, Peseiro led the team through an additional 13 games, with seven wins, four draws, and two losses.
The team’s standout performance came at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), where they secured second place with five wins, one draw, and one loss. Despite falling short in the final against the host nation, their remarkable journey earned them recognition from the federal government, including national honours, landed property, and a house.
The NFF has yet to announce Peseiro’s successor, although reports indicate that he has been offered a new contract worth $80,000 monthly, pending his acceptance.
