  • Governor Yusuf urges President Tinubu to reopen borders for food imports to alleviate suffering due to increased commodity prices
  • He emphasizes the dire situation of hunger, appreciates ongoing food initiatives, and urges immediate border reopening for food accessibility

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently consider reopening the country’s borders for food imports to alleviate the suffering of the Nigerian populace.

The governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, revealed that Governor Yusuf made this appeal after meeting with the Controller General of the Nigerian Customs Service, Alhaji Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, at the Government House in Kano.

Governor Yusuf highlighted the dire situation of hunger and starvation in the country, attributing it to the widespread increase in commodity prices.

“We appreciate the President’s efforts with the ongoing national food initiative, particularly his decision to launch it in Kano. If implemented, this program will help mitigate the effects of food scarcity,” Governor Yusuf stated.

He emphasized that reopening the borders and allowing free importation of goods by the Federal Government could immediately address the growing population’s scarcity and affordability of food.

During the meeting, Governor Yusuf emphasized the hardships faced by the people, especially during the holy month of Ramadan, stressing the importance of reopening the border to ease their burdens.

He commended the Customs’ initiative to distribute food items to Kano residents amidst the ongoing hardships and urged the agency to ensure that this assistance reaches those most in need.

Governor Yusuf assured the Customs Service of his full support to benefit Kano and Nigeria.

Adeniyi emphasized the importance of strengthening ties between the Nigeria Customs Service and the Kano community, pledging enhanced collaboration and understanding.

He assured stakeholders of the Service’s commitment to implementing policies improving business processes and fostering engagement.

During his visit to Kano, Adeniyi affirmed the Customs Service’s efforts to address food scarcity and hardship by distributing essential food items to the state’s residents.
