  • It also has the mandate to undertake demographic sample surveys, compile, collate and publish migration and civil registration statistics as well as monitor the country’s population policy.
  • A fortnight ago, the Senate screened and confirmed the 17 commissioners out of the 19 whose nominations were sent by President Tinubu as two others did not appear for screening.

President Bola Tinubu has sworn in 17 federal commissioners of the National Population Commission, NPC, who he nominated last November.

The 17 new and returning commissioners took the oath of office on Wednesday afternoon at the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

WITHIN NIGERIA recalls that Tinubu nominated 20 federal commissioners for the NPC on November 8, 2023, nine of whom were appointed for a second term in office.

A month later, on December 12, he forwarded the names of 19 of the 20 nominees to the Senate for confirmation.

However, only 17 appeared for the Senate’s screening on February 24, 2024, and were subsequently confirmed.

They include Emmanuel Eke, Clifford Zirra, Chidi Ezeoke, Isa Buratal, Alex Ukam, Blessyn Brume-Maguha, and Jeremiah Ogbonna Nwankwegu.

Others are Tony Alyejina, Ejike Ezeh, Abubakar Damburam, Uba Nnabue, Sa’adatu Garba, Aminu Ibrahim Tsanyawa, Yori Afolabii, Mary Afan, Saany Sale, and Ogiri Henry

Two nominees, Olakunle Sobukol and Temitayo Oluwatiyi, were not screened as they did not appear before the Committee due to “recent political developments in their states” as explained by the now suspended Senator Abdul Ningi.
