FG Initiates Inmate Training Program, Grants N500,000 Each

The federal government has initiated vocational training programs for inmates across 241 custodial facilities nationwide, aiming to equip them with artisanal skills and empower them for successful reintegration into society.

Abiola Arogundade, the Senior Special Adviser to the President on Technical, Vocational, and Entrepreneurship Education, announced this development during a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday.

Arogundade emphasized the government’s commitment to empowering over five million Nigerians annually through skill acquisition initiatives.

Under the scheme, each participating inmate will receive comprehensive training and certification, and upon completion, they will receive a grant of N500,000 to facilitate the establishment of their own businesses.

“We launched this initiative at Kuje Custodial Centre after conducting a needs assessment of the inmates,” Arogundade stated. “Our goal is to ensure that every trained individual receives global recognition for their acquired skills.”

In addition to financial support, the government is collaborating with the Bank of Industry and other partners to provide comprehensive business support services. These include training in hairdressing, entrepreneurship, and the utilization of modern technology such as Point-of-Sale (POS) systems.

“We are creating opportunities for multiple income streams,” Arogundade explained. “Inmates will have the skills to operate POS systems, provide phone charging services, and engage in various business ventures.”

The program, which has already commenced at Kuje Correctional Centre, will be replicated in other correctional facilities across the country. State-of-the-art equipment, including sewing machines and laptops, will be provided to enhance training facilities.

“We are dedicated to providing inmates with modern tools and resources for skill acquisition,” Arogundade assured. “Our training modules cover various fields, ensuring comprehensive skill development for successful reintegration into society.”
