Human rights activist and Convener of Concerned Nigerians, Deji Adeyanju, has strongly condemned the killing of 16 soldiers during a peace mission in Delta State.

Adeyanju urged security agents in the country to swiftly apprehend the perpetrators and ensure they face the full wrath of the law.

Expressing condolences to the Nigerian army and the families of the deceased soldiers, Adeyanju lamented the tragic loss and extended sympathy to those affected by the incident.

The Nigerian Army confirmed the unfortunate news, revealing that the troops from the 181 Amphibious Battalion in the Bomadi local government area of Delta State were attacked by youths amidst a communal crisis between the Okuama and Okoloba communities.

He wrote, “It is with a heavy heart and deep sorrow that I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families of soldiers killed in Delta State. The news of the tragic incident that claimed the lives of the Commanding Officer, two majors, one captain, and twelve soldiers from the 181 Amphibious Battalion has left me in shock, disbelief and mourning.

“These brave men and women who protect us daily were on a noble peace mission. They selflessly dedicated themselves to the service of our country and strived to bring stability and harmony to our country and the Okuoma community in Bomadi Local Government Area of Delta State.

“May the souls of our fallen heroes find eternal peace and rest. Their courage, dedication, and selflessness will forever be in our hearts and minds. We will forever be grateful for their service and sacrifice.

“I call on the authorities to leave no stone untouched in ensuring those responsible for this dastardly act are brought to Justice.”

Meanwhile, the Defence Headquarters has initiated efforts to arrest the assailants, according to Acting Director Defence Information, Brig.-Gen. Tukur Gusau. The troops responded to a distress call about the communal crisis, leading to the tragic incident.

Gusau affirmed that progress has been made in apprehending the culprits, with ongoing efforts to uncover the motive behind the attack.
