Florian Wirtz’s goal just 84 seconds into the game propelled Bayer Leverkusen to a 3-2 victory over Freiburg on Sunday, extending their unbeaten streak to 38 matches across all competitions.

Leverkusen’s seventh consecutive league win maintains their 10-point lead over perennial champions Bayern Munich with eight games remaining as they aim for their first-ever Bundesliga title.

“It was a solid performance and a well-deserved victory. Winning in Freiburg is never easy, but we continue to push forward,” commented Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso to DAZN, while also lauding Wirtz’s standout performance.

Wirtz, a standout performer for Leverkusen this season, set the tone early with his seventh league goal, cutting in from the left and unleashing a precise shot with his right foot.

Despite Freiburg’s response through Ritsu Doan, Leverkusen regained the lead before halftime, capitalizing on a mistake by Freiburg goalkeeper Noah Atubolu, with Adam Hlozek slotting into an empty net.

Patrik Schick extended Leverkusen’s lead with a remarkable finish to a swift counter-attack before Yannik Keitel pulled one back for Freiburg, although it proved insufficient.

Meanwhile, Borussia Dortmund secured a 3-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt in the weekend’s final game, maintaining their pursuit of fourth place in the Bundesliga standings.

Despite falling behind to an early Frankfurt goal by Mario Goetze, Dortmund rallied back with goals from Karim Adeyemi and Mats Hummels, whose diving header put them ahead in the 81st minute. Emre Can’s stoppage-time penalty sealed the win.

“We’ve won our last four games, heading into the international break with a much better feeling than two weeks ago,” stated Hummels. “While we’re satisfied to reach the Champions League quarter-finals, we acknowledge that we need to improve our Bundesliga standing.”
