The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has affirmed its commitment to collaborating with relevant regulatory bodies to safeguard the data privacy of Nigerians in organizations’ use of artificial intelligence (AI).

Aminu Maida, the executive vice chairman of the NCC, emphasized this stance during the 2024 World Consumer Rights Day, themed “Fair and Responsible AI for Consumers,” in Abuja over the weekend. Represented by Abraham Oshadami, the Technical Services Designate executive commissioner, Maida highlighted AI’s pivotal role in driving advancements across various sectors, such as healthcare, finance, and transportation.

While acknowledging AI’s positive impacts, Maida stressed the importance of employing it responsibly to uphold consumer trust and prevent potential pitfalls. He emphasized the significance of ethical considerations throughout AI’s lifecycle, encompassing its development, deployment, and usage.

Maida elaborated, “Responsible AI entails ethical utilization across all stages, addressing concerns such as bias, privacy, transparency, and accountability. Reports indicate that responsible AI empowers consumers, fosters trust, and mitigates adverse repercussions.”
