  • Bashir Ahmad ridicules Peter Obi for participating in the breaking of Ramadan fast, accusing him of engaging in theatrics
  • Obi explains his participation as fulfilling a sacred duty and emphasizes the significance of his visit to Nasarawa State

Bashir Ahmad, a former aide to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, has ridiculed Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, for participating in the breaking of Ramadan fast with Muslim faithful in Nasarawa state on Monday.

A video circulating on social media showed Obi sitting in a mosque to partake in Iftar, the meal Muslims consume to end their fast after sunset during Ramadan.

In response, Obi explained on his X account in a series of tweets that he viewed it as an opportunity to fulfill a sacred duty in line with the Ramadan season. He recounted his visit to Lafia in Nasarawa state, where he met with the Emir of Lafia and Governor Abdullahi Sule, emphasizing the significance of the visit beyond mere formality.

However, Bashir Ahmad, reacting on X, accused Obi of engaging in theatrics and questioned why he didn’t partake in breaking the Ramadan fast during his eight-year tenure as governor of Anambra State. Ahmad criticized Obi, suggesting that his recent actions were politically motivated in anticipation of the 2027 general elections.

“Peter Obi loves dramas; he would have to act in many scripts from now to 2027 and still end up producing an unsellable movie in the ballot boxes. I just watched his latest hit, his visit to a mosque in Nyaya where he joined Muslims during their breaking of the Ramadan fast,” Ahmad wrote.

“For eight years as a governor, Obi didn’t deem it fit to break fast with Muslims in Anambra even years after leaving office. 2027 politics is in the offing,” he added.

While Obi’s gesture received commendations from some Nigerians for promoting love and tolerance, others criticized it as mere showmanship.
