  • Nigeria, facing security challenges, deploys troops to Abyei, emphasizing commitment to global peace and security, and Africa’s stability

The Martin Luther Agwai International Leadership and Peacekeeping Centre concluded the training of 157 Army troops prepared for a peacekeeping mission in Abyei, South Sudan.

This deployment comes at a critical juncture for Nigeria, grappling with a myriad of security challenges including banditry, terrorism, herders/farmers conflicts, and kidnapping.

With security experts advocating for increased personnel to tackle these challenges effectively, the deployment of troops remains a significant step forward.

The deployed troops, predominantly from Nigerian Company 2 to the United Nations Interim Security Force in Abyei (NIGCOY 2 UNISFA), comprised 15 officers and 142 soldiers.

Addressing the troops at their pre-deployment graduation ceremony, Maj.-Gen. Boniface Sinjen, the Chief of Operations, Army Headquarters, emphasized the commitment and capability of the Armed Forces of Nigeria in deploying competent peacekeepers, underscoring Nigeria’s dedication to global peace and security.

He reiterated Nigeria’s National Defence Policy, emphasizing the priority placed on ensuring security and stability in Africa, particularly within the West African sub-region.

Highlighting Nigeria’s extensive involvement in Peace Support Operations worldwide, Sinjen noted the nation’s participation in over 40 peacekeeping missions and the deployment of more than 100,000 peacekeepers since its first mission in the Congo in 1960.

The UNISFA mission in Abyei, established to restore peace and stability post-demilitarization in June 2011, underscores the critical role of the deployed troops in protecting civilians, preventing incursions, and ensuring security in the area.

Sinjen urged the contingent to uphold professionalism and adhere to the rules of engagement, emphasizing the importance of respecting human rights and diversity in their operational environment.

Addressing the troops earlier, Maj.-Gen. Ademola Adedoja, Commandant of MLAILPKC, highlighted the six-week pre-deployment training initiated on January 27, 2024. The training aimed to equip the unit with essential skills and knowledge for effective performance during their deployment to Abyei.
