  • The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) praises President Tinubu’s decision to reopen borders and restore power supply to Niger Republic
  • The lifting of sanctions is seen as a positive step, offering hope for improved living conditions and economic activities

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the decision to reopen the Nigeria/Niger air and land borders, lift economic sanctions, and restore power supply to Niger Republic, among other measures.

In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Professor Tukur Muhammad-Baba, the ACF lauded President Tinubu’s directive as a positive development for both Nigeria and Niger. The forum highlighted the adverse impact of the sanctions on border communities, where local economic activities had suffered significantly.

According to the ACF, lifting sanctions brings hope for improved living conditions in these communities, with the resumption of critical supplies such as food, medicines, and electricity. Additionally, air travel operators and passengers can anticipate relief from the hardships endured during the sanctions period.

The statement commended President Tinubu for his proactive approach in addressing the challenges faced by Nigeria and Niger, describing his actions as a significant step towards safeguarding Africa’s interests and countering neo-colonial influences.

Furthermore, the ACF recognized the intervention of General Yakubu Gowon, a former Nigerian Head of State and a key figure in establishing ECOWAS, in resolving the crisis. The forum appreciated General Gowon for promoting unity among West African nations.

In light of these developments, the ACF urged the political authorities in the Republic of Niger to reciprocate the gesture and leverage the opportunity to enhance Nigeria/Niger relations. The forum emphasized the importance of fostering mutual cooperation and understanding between the two countries for the benefit of their citizens and the broader West African region.
