  • Kenneth Omeruo reassures Nigerians of the Super Eagles’ determination to secure maximum points in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers
  • Omeruo emphasizes the team’s readiness for challenges ahead, despite a loss to Mali following a victory over Ghana

Super Eagles defender Kenneth Omeruo has assured Nigerians of the team’s unwavering commitment to securing maximum points as they gear up for the resumption of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in June.

Before the team departed from Marrakech, Morocco, following friendly matches against Ghana and Mali, Omeruo emphasized the players’ determination to perform at their best. Despite a 2-0 loss to Mali following a 2-1 victory over Ghana, Omeruo maintained a positive outlook, highlighting the team’s readiness for upcoming challenges.

“As we head into the matches against South Africa and Benin Republic in June, our focus remains sharp. For many players, this is a significant opportunity to compete on the world stage, and we are fully committed to seizing it. We cannot afford to disappoint ourselves or the nation,” Omeruo affirmed.

Following the conclusion of the friendly games, most players returned to their respective clubs in Europe. At the same time, interim Head Coach Finidi George and the technical and administrative staff departed Casablanca for Lagos.

Reflecting on the friendly encounters, Finidi George acknowledged positive aspects and areas for improvement. Despite the defeat to Mali, he expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, emphasizing the need to capitalize on scoring opportunities and minimize mistakes.

“While we suffered a setback against Mali, it’s important to note that we weren’t outplayed. We showed good intensity and created chances, albeit without converting them. We must learn from our mistakes and stay focused,” Finidi remarked.

As the Nigerian Football Federation continues its search for a permanent replacement for former coach Jose Peseiro, Finidi remains in temporary charge. The upcoming matches against South Africa and Benin Republic present crucial opportunities for the Super Eagles to strengthen their position in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.
