  • Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State raised concerns over escalating security challenges due to a depletion of soldiers
  • Lawal emphasized the urgent need for reinforcements and additional military resources to address the deteriorating security situation effectively

Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has sounded the alarm regarding the escalating security challenges in the region, citing a depletion of soldiers due to redeployment.

Expressing deep concern, Governor Lawal called for reinforcements rather than a reduction in troop numbers to tackle the insecurity head-on.

In an interview with BBC Hausa, he emphasized the urgent need for additional military resources, asserting that Zamfara deserves equitable support like other states facing similar threats.

Governor Lawal disclosed, “I have engaged with both the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, to address the deteriorating security situation in Zamfara.

“While the federal authorities oversee military and police operations, I am exploring all possible avenues to quell this insecurity.

“One initiative within our purview is a volunteer program; we trained individuals from all 13 local governments three months ago. Their intimate knowledge of the local terrain greatly assists security agencies in combating criminal activities.

“All stakeholders are exerting maximum effort, and we remain steadfast in our commitment to restoring peace in Zamfara.

“I conveyed to the Chief of Defence Staff the pressing need for more soldiers in the state. However, it is disconcerting that the current troops are being redeployed elsewhere, which is counterproductive.

“Furthermore, I requested additional equipment and military vehicles, which are reportedly abundant in Zamfara, akin to allocations received by other states. I have been assured that my requests will be duly considered.”

The governor’s plea underscores the gravity of the security situation in Zamfara, emphasizing the critical need for immediate action to safeguard the lives and properties of its residents.
