Chief Emeka Anyaoku, former Commonwealth Secretary-General, voiced concerns over the collapse of ethics and values within Nigerian society, noting that despite this, some individuals have risen as exemplary figures in their respective fields.

Anyaoku made these remarks in Lagos during the 27th anniversary and the Great Nigerian Awards, 2024, organized by the Hallmarks of Labour Foundation under the chairmanship of Dr. Christopher Kolade, Chairman of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees—the event aimed to honour 12 distinguished Nigerians for their contributions.

Among the awardees were Prof. Mohammad Ali Pate, Prof. Umar Pate, Prof. Rukayyatu Ahmed Rufai, Emeritus Professor Akinjide Osuntokun, and Prof. Adesola Ogunniyi, among others.

Anyaoku, who chaired the award event, emphasized recognizing individuals despite a societal breakdown of ethics and values. He lamented the loss of character and integrity, once revered virtues in Nigerian society.
