  • The NBA said that the supposed leader or convener of the group, Sylvanus Alewu, was not a name known to it.
  • Over 500 legal practitioners from across the country gathered at the Supreme Court complex on Monday.

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has dismissed a protest by lawyers over what they described as ”illegal approach” of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in handling its case against Yahaya Bello, former governor of Kogi.

In a terse notice on Tuesday, Habeeb Lawal, national publicity secretary of NBA, said that the “group of protesters are not lawyers.”

“The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) is aware that some news outlets have reported this news,” the notice reads.

“Please be informed that while the NBA respects the rights of citizens to assemble and protest, we insist that this particular group of persons are not lawyers.

“For completeness, their supposed leader or convener Sylvanus K. Alewu is not a name known to us.”

On April 22, about 500 lawyers from across the country stormed the supreme court complex for protest.

Lawyers under the aegis of the judicial watchdogs, faulted the barricade on the ex-governor’ residence, in bid to arrest him, despite a valid court order to the contrary, which had not been vacated.

On April 18, the EFCC declared Yahaya Bello, wanted over alleged N80 billion financial crimes.

The anti-graft commission asked anyone with useful information on Bello’s whereabouts to contact the commission or the nearest police station.
