  • Dana Air’s suspension sparks controversy in aviation sector; stakeholders criticize Ministry of Aviation’s intervention in regulatory affairs
  • The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority swiftly suspended Dana Air following the Ministry’s directive; critics deem this interference in the NCAA’s regulatory jurisdiction

The recent halt of Dana Air’s operations after a runway incident on its Abuja-London flight in Lagos is stirring commotion in the aviation sector. Stakeholders are adamant that the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development overstepped its boundaries by intervening in regulatory affairs and proposing the airline’s suspension.

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) swiftly suspended Dana Air following the Ministry’s public directive.

Critics question Minister Festus Keyamo’s directive, labeling it interference in NCAA’s regulatory jurisdiction.

Amidst the unfolding situation, Dana Air has begun refunding passengers with existing bookings, assuring cooperation with aviation authorities to resolve the suspension issues promptly.

The airline’s proactive stance aims to ease disruptions and prioritize customer satisfaction during this challenging phase. Affected passengers are urged to facilitate Dana Air’s refund process promptly.

Meanwhile, the Aviation Roundtable and Safety Initiative (ASRTI), an aviation industry think tank, denounces the Minister’s actions as contrary to established laws and processes.

ASRTI Secretary Olumide Ohunayo asserts that the suspension contradicts principles and undermines autonomy, posing threats to sector safety and security.

Furthermore, ART condemns the minister’s external interference, stressing the importance of NCAA’s autonomy as per the Nigerian Civil Aviation Act.

Aviation analyst Prof Anthony Kila deems Dana Air’s grounding unimpressive, advocating for a thorough investigation and vigilance instead.

Former Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) official, Alhaji Mohammed Tukur, likens the Minister’s action to regressive policies of the past, citing a similar grounding incident during President Obasanjo’s tenure.

In defense, in an interview with Channels TV, the Minister vows to conduct audits on all airlines, aiming to curb corruption and ensure passenger safety.
