FG Boosts National Grid with 625 Megawatts Addition

The federal government has announced an increase of 625 megawatts to the national grid, elevating its wheeling capacity to 4800 megawatts.

Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, disclosed this during the commissioning of the 63 MVA, 132/33kV mobile station at Ajah, Lagos State, and Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, held simultaneously.

Adelabu emphasized that the Ajah Mobile Substation is strategically positioned to address transmission capacity limitations by over 1300MW nationwide.

He highlighted the substation’s role in enhancing transmission capacity, energy access, and overall progress towards the 4000MW to 6000MW enhancement targets.

Adelabu underscored the versatility of the mobile substation, noting its significance in responding swiftly to power demands, ensuring uninterrupted service delivery, and serving as a temporary measure during maintenance and emergencies.

Addressing challenges within the power sector, Adelabu noted resistance and distractions from vested interests but assured Nigerians of the government’s commitment to completing Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) projects, which would yield tangible benefits.

He urged Nigerians to endure temporary difficulties for enduring benefits, emphasizing the government’s focus on citizens’ welfare and the need for service-driven tariffs rather than mere cost reflection.

Adelabu reiterated the government’s stance on electricity provision, stating that distribution companies (discos) must ensure 20-24 hours of electricity supply before charging N225/kwh, or face heavy fines.

Furthermore, he urged Nigerians to protect national assets from vandalism and sabotage, recognizing them as vital to the nation’s development.

The MD/CEO of FGN Power Company, Mr. Kenny Anuwe, highlighted the project’s phased implementation, stating that half of the project has been delivered, with a target of 4000 to 6000 megawatts across the six geopolitical zones.
