- FIJ confirmed his release on their website today
Daniel Ojukwu, the FIJ reporter who was kidnapped by the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) of the Inspector-General of Police, has been released after spending 10 days in police custody.
His freedom came after civil society organizations and journalistsprotested at the Force Headquarters, demanding his release.
FIJ confirmed his release on their website today.
Ojukwu disappeared on May 1, with his phone turned off and his whereabouts unknown to his colleagues, family, and friends.
Despite FIJ’s missing person report to the police, it wasn’t until a private detective hired by FIJ tracked the last active location of his phone to an address in Isheri Olofin that they discovered he had been picked up by the police.
Ojukwu’s family learned of his detention at Panti, where he’s accused of violating the 2015 Cybercrime Act.
He was then moved from Panti to the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre in Abuja, and later to the Force Criminal Investigation Department in what FIJ believes was an attempt to break his resolve.
The police imposed strict bail conditions on FIJ’s legal team, led by Omoyele Sowore, Jide Oyekunle, and Bukky Shonibare.
