Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Intergovernmental Affairs, Canice Nwachukwu, has emphasized the need for a centralized monitoring system to regulate Nigeria’s sports betting and gaming industry.

Speaking during a public hearing at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja, Nwachukwu highlighted the importance of enforcing the Lottery Regulatory Commission Act to curb sports betting’s adverse effects on society.

While acknowledging the sector’s legitimacy, Nwachukwu stressed the necessity of adhering to established rules and regulations to mitigate negative societal impacts.

“We respect individuals’ rights to conduct their business, but it’s imperative that we operate within the framework of established regulations,” Nwachukwu stated.

He emphasized the importance of implementing a central monitoring system to effectively enforce regulations and ensure the smooth operation of gaming and betting activities while preventing them from becoming a social menace.

Nwachukwu asserted that introducing a central monitoring system would address existing challenges and contribute to maintaining order in the industry.

Echoing these sentiments, Mr. Lanre Gbajabiamila, the director-general of the National Lottery Regulatory Commission, emphasized the role of lottery and gaming in generating revenue and promoting sports entertainment as a viable development instrument.

The public hearing aimed to explore strategies to curtail sports betting’s negative impacts while leveraging its potential for revenue generation and entertainment. Through effective monitoring and regulation, stakeholders aim to balance economic opportunities and societal well-being in the gaming industry.
