  • Men of the Nigeria Police Force stormed the quarters on Friday and barricaded the entrance and exit of the State House of Assembly complex.

The police in Rivers State have disclosed why police officers were dispatched to the State House of Assembly Quarters in Port Harcourt.

Men of the Nigeria Police Force stormed the quarters on Friday and barricaded the entrance and exit of the State House of Assembly complex.

Over 30 policemen reportedly besieged the first and second gates to the lawmakers’ estate, while about 25 patrol vans were used to block the other two entrances.

The development came shortly after the embattled Speaker of the House, Martins Amaewhule, accused Governor Sim Fubara of planning to demolish the legislative quarters.

Speaking on the heavy presence of armed police officers at the Assembly Quarters, Rivers Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, Olatunji Disu, said the move was to prevent break down of law and order in the politically-charged State.

Disu made the clarification in an interview with Channels Television on Friday.

The clarification followed claims that police officers have taken over the assembly quarters, amid the ongoing leadership tussle in the assembly.

However, the Commissioner said contrary to reports of heavy police presence at the Assembly quarters, only four patrol vehicles were posted there.

Disu said that the command had yet to receive official notification from the court regarding the interim order restraining pro-Wike lawmakers from parading themselves as legislators
