  • Professor Attahiru Jega served as the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from 2010 to 2015.
  •  He was appointed by President Goodluck Jonathan and served two terms, presiding over the 2011 and 2015 general elections.

President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of the former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega as Chairman of the governing Council of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, Sokoto State.

In the early hours on Saturday, the federal government approved the reconstitution of governing councils at public tertiary institutions.

Jega’s appointment is among 555 others approved, to serve as chairmen and members of governing councils of tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

The re-constitution of governing councils now comes after 11 months of repeated calls from education stakeholders.

Recall that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) had earlier threatened to embark on a strike over the government’s refusal to reconstitute the governing councils of public universities.

ASUU had on Tuesday issued a two-week ultimatum within which it demanded the government to do the needful.
