  • The monarch expressed fears of autocratic governors who may destabilize cooperation among states.
  • He recommended strengthening current police force instead.

Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi, the Oluwo of Iwo has urged the federal government to be wary of the proposed creation of state police, saying the country is not ripe for it.

This was contained in a statement issued by the monarch and made available to journalists by his spokesperson in Osogbo on Monday.

The monarch expressed fear that the autocratic governors in Nigeria could abuse it.

He stated that beyond just being autocratic and liable to abuse the policy, governors could destabilize the existing cooperation amongst the state authorities.

The monarch warned that rather than assenting to such proposal, President Bola Tinubu should employ more personnel for the present police force and enhance its welfare package.

The statement reads; “Policing is on the exclusive legislative list of the federal government. Creating a state police will destabilize the existing tranquility and cooperation existing between and among the Nigeria states authorities.

“Most state authorities are known for flaunting the order of the federal government. Exclusive affairs will be abused by governors with autocratic tendencies. Nigeria is not ripe for state policing.

“I implore the federal government to recruit more police personnel and improve their welfare package. This, if done, will fortify the Nigerian Police Force and bring sanity to the policing.”
