Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, emphasized the need to address shortcomings observed in the rulings of the 2023 general elections, marking a significant shift in the adjudication of political matters.

Speaking at a two-day workshop for judges in Abuja, Justice Ariwoola highlighted the importance of reviewing the judiciary’s performance during the election petitions.

He acknowledged successes and areas needing improvement and urged a critical assessment to ensure better outcomes in the future.

While praising achievements, he stressed the importance of acknowledging and rectifying inadequacies to adopt new methods for success.

Justice Ariwoola addressed the pressure exerted by political matters within the electoral laws’ time frame, noting the challenges faced by judicial officers, including threats and intimidation from political entities.

He emphasized the judiciary’s commitment to upholding the law without succumbing to external pressures or public sentiments.

President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, highlighted constitutional and legislative areas requiring review ahead of the 2027 general elections, including sections of the Nigerian Constitution and the Electoral Act.

Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), stressed the importance of the workshop’s findings and recommendations in guiding stakeholders for future electoral cycles.
