  • Senator Barau Jibrin emphasizes the collaboration of ECOWAS institutions to promote democracy, enhance security, and foster development in West Africa
  • He advocates for the ECOWAS Parliament’s independence to strengthen democracy and suggests an Ad hoc Mediation Committee for regional conflict resolution

Senator Barau Jibrin, the acting Speaker of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament, has emphasized strong collaboration among ECOWAS institutions to promote democracy, enhance security, and foster development in the West African sub-region.

Speaking at the opening of the 2024 second extraordinary session of the 6th legislature of the ECOWAS Parliament in Kano on Tuesday, Senator Barau stressed the parliament’s openness to discussing critical issues affecting the entire subregion and proposing recommendations to unify its people further.

He advocated for the independence of the community parliament to bolster its oversight function and contribute to strengthening democracy and good governance among member states.

As the Deputy President of the Nigerian Senate, Senator Barau expressed the parliament’s determination to prevent the disintegration of ECOWAS following the departure of Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali from the regional bloc. He proposed the appointment of an Ad hoc Mediation Committee to engage with stakeholders and encourage these countries to reconsider their decisions, fostering dialogue to resolve regional conflicts.
