  • The sharp currency devaluation forced many Nigerian students at Teesside University to discontinue studies and return home
  • Students felt unsupported by the university, which strictly enforced payment rules, resulting in frozen accounts and revoked visas

The sharp devaluation of Nigeria’s currency has severely impacted Nigerian students at Teesside University in the United Kingdom, forcing many to discontinue their studies and return home.

Several students shared with the BBC their despair over the university’s rigid handling of their payment difficulties. Despite their pleas and attempts to negotiate payment plans, the university adhered strictly to visa compliance rules. As a result, the students’ accounts were frozen, and their visas were revoked since non-payment of fees breaches the conditions of their visa sponsorship.

The affected students reported experiencing severe emotional distress and felt they received inadequate support from the university. This contrasts with the institution’s offer of individualized assistance and flexible payment options.
