  • Demonstrators at Nasarawa State Government House urged APC to reinstate North Central chairmanship following Abdullahi Adamu’s resignation
  • APC North Central stakeholders convened in Lafia to protest Ganduje’s leadership and advocate for North Central representation in the chairmanship

A peaceful demonstration unfolded at the Nasarawa State Government House in Lafia, as demonstrators urged the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership to reinstate the party’s chairmanship in the North Central region. This demand arose following Senator Abdullahi Adamu’s resignation, which resulted in the position being lost by the North Central zone.

The protest coincided with a gathering of APC stakeholders from the North Central zone convened in Lafia, the capital of Nasarawa State, over the weekend. Dignitaries present at the meeting included George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, the APC National Chairman, and governors and legislators representing the zone.

Demonstrators, including members of the Coalition of APC North Central Stakeholders, marched towards the meeting venue, vocalizing slogans such as “Ganduje must go.”

This protest underscores the persistent discord since Ganduje assumed leadership of the party following Adamu’s resignation in July 2023. Members of the North Central APC have been advocating for a representative from their region to complete Adamu’s tenure.

Sani Ibrahim Jigas, representing the Coalition of APC North Central Stakeholders, addressed the press on behalf of the protesters, asserting, “We urge the APC to adhere to the party’s constitution by restoring the chairmanship to the North Central. Let us fulfil our tenure.”

He stressed the North Central zone’s rightful claim to the party’s chairmanship, citing their contribution of five APC governors out of six states and their substantial support for President Tinubu’s electoral victory in 2023.

Reports indicate that law enforcement authorities detained some protesters, but they were subsequently released on Sunday.
