Kimberly-Clark, the company behind Huggies, announced that it will cease local manufacturing and sales in Nigeria after 14 years.
The American multinational corporation disclosed this in a statement on Friday, citing its newly refocused global corporate priorities and economic conditions in Nigeria as reasons for the decision.
“Kimberly-Clark today announces it has made the difficult decision to exit its business in Nigeria after almost 15 years, due to recently refocused company strategic priorities globally as well as economic developments in the country,” the company said.
The company said its top priority will be to fulfil its obligations and ensure that employees and partners “are treated with fairness and respect”.
Kimberly-Clark opened a $100 million factory in Lagos in 2022 but is now exiting Nigeria, following the trend of other multinationals leaving the country.
GlaxoSmithKline announced plans to cease operations in August 2023, and Sanofi-Aventis halted its direct operations in November 2023.
