The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has raised serious concerns about the increasing attacks on healthcare providers by patients’ relatives, caregivers, and the public. This alarming trend has prompted calls for urgent action.

During a visit to Kano, NMA President Professor Bala Mohammad Audu discussed these issues with the state government, aiming to address the growing security challenges healthcare workers face.

Professor Audu expressed dismay over the recent violence against doctors, nurses, dentists, and other healthcare professionals. He emphasized the importance of ensuring their safety and security in hospitals nationwide.

“At a time when we are facing a shortage of healthcare providers due to brain drain, those remaining are working tirelessly to maintain high-quality care. It is disheartening to face security challenges in our workplaces,” Audu stated.

He highlighted a recent incident at Hasiya Bayero Paediatric Hospital in Kano, where armed individuals threatened two female doctors. This underscores the urgent need to address security lapses in healthcare facilities.

Following the attack, healthcare providers at the hospital have stopped working, citing concerns over their safety.

In response, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, the Commissioner of Health, assured us that the situation was being addressed. He confirmed that an investigation is underway to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.
