Deputy Inspector General of Police for the South West region, DIG Biodun Alabi, on Tuesday called on police officers to treat the public with dignity and respect for human rights in their duties.
During a one-day visit to the Ogun State Command in Eleweran, Abeokuta, Alabi emphasized that human rights abuses significantly damage the police force’s reputation.
Addressing the officers, Alabi warned that authorities would take strict action against any officer found violating people’s rights.
He said, “Human rights abuse has been identified as one of the major factors affecting the image of the police.”
He urged officers to maintain exemplary conduct and the highest level of discipline to earn public respect and support.
“Officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force must be exemplary in their conduct,” Alabi stated.
The visit, part of a directive from the Inspector General of Police for DIGs to oversee states under their jurisdiction, saw Alabi welcomed by Ogun State Commissioner of Police Abiodun Alamutu, Deputy Commissioner of Police Bode Ojajuni, and other senior officials.
Commissioner Alamutu highlighted Ogun’s status as an industrial hub and its unique security challenges, affirming the command’s commitment to addressing these issues.
Additionally, DIG Alabi paid a courtesy visit to the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo.
He informed the royal father about the police force’s plans to enhance effective policing.
Oba Gbadebo commended the police for maintaining peace through community policing and expressed his support.
“I pray for more success in all your endeavours.”
