  • The federal government will vet NIMC agents and partners to prevent breaches in the national identity database and ensure compliance with best practices
  • Law enforcement will crack down on online phishing that targets citizens’ data, and NIMC will suspend bypass enrollment to rectify irregularities

The federal government has announced new security protocols to vet all agents and partners of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to prevent breaches in the country’s identity database.

In a statement released over the weekend, NIMC stated that all Licensed Verification Agents, Front End Partners (FEPs), and Diaspora FEPs will now undergo thorough security vetting to ensure compliance with global best practices in identity management.

Kayode Adegoke, NIMC’s Head of Media, stated, “Law enforcement authorities have been authorized to crack down on and apprehend individuals involved in online phishing schemes targeting citizens’ data.”

NIMC has received numerous reports of fraudulent online platforms that compel Nigerians to submit personal information for National Identification Number (NIN) modification or enrollment services. Adegoke warned that perpetrators of these illegal activities will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
