The Federal Government has expressed its revulsion at the recent performances of the Super Eagles in the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying series, describing the display of the team as unacceptable.

The Super Eagles lost 2-1 to Benin Republic in Abidjan on Monday after scraping a 1-1 draw against South Africa in Uyo on Saturday leaving the team with only one point from a possible six and three points from four games, a situation that now leaves Finidi George’s side with a mountain to climb to qualify for the next FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by USA, Canada, and Mexico.

Following a slew of abysmal and disappointing performances, the Minister of Sports Development, John Enoh, has demanded a detailed technical report from the Nigerian Football Federation, NFF.

This was disclosed on Monday in a statement by Diana-Mary Nsan, Special Assistant, Media, to the minister.

The minister said the team has underperformed and failed to reward the immense support given to them by the President and Nigerians.

Stating that “the recent results are unacceptable,” the minister said: “Despite the immense support from President Tinubu and the high expectations of Nigerian football fans, the Super Eagles have underperformed. The NFF must provide a comprehensive technical report explaining the reasons behind this poor showing and give cause why there mustn’t be consequences for the disappointment caused by both government and the generality of Nigerians.”

He added: “Our supporters are passionate and devoted. They deserve an explanation for why the Super Eagles have not been performing to the expected standards since after the last AFCON.”
