  • Malam Hamzat Lawal urged President Tinubu to enforce clear timelines for security chiefs’ mandates amid Nigeria’s ongoing challenges
  • Emmanuel Njoku of CODE encouraged Nigerian youths to engage actively in politics, emphasizing imperfections within democratic systems

Malam Hamzat Lawal, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Connected Development (CODE), has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to set clear timelines for security chiefs to meet their mandates on insecurity or face removal.

Lawal made this plea on Thursday in Abuja during the launch of CODE’s 2023 Annual Report. He highlighted Nigeria’s milestone of 25 years of uninterrupted democracy while emphasizing the ongoing challenges.

“While we celebrate democracy, it’s also a time for reflection on our journey. Despite some progress, more needs to be accomplished,” Lawal remarked.

He urged President Tinubu to uphold his commitment to accountability by ensuring that appointed officials adhere to specific Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), akin to recent actions in the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.

Expressing concern over the persistent security crises despite substantial budget allocations, Lawal stressed the urgency for Tinubu to issue directives to service chiefs to safeguard lives and property effectively.

Meanwhile, Emmanuel Njoku, Director of Democracy and Governance at CODE, acknowledged that no democracy is flawless. He encouraged Nigerian youths to participate in politics for a brighter future actively.
