  • The presidency urged Nigerians to adopt subsistence farming to combat rising food prices and ensure food availability and affordability
  • Special Adviser Bayo Onanuga assured that government agricultural investments would yield positive results amid global living cost crises within twelve months

The presidency has urged Nigerians to adopt subsistence farming to tackle the rising food prices.

Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, appealed this during a meeting with the Association of Corporate Online Editors (ACOE) in Abuja. A statement from ACOE’s Chairman, Mr. Martins Odiete, detailed the discussion.

In 1976, former President Olusegun Obasanjo introduced “Operation Feed the Nation” to promote farming. Similarly, in 1984, former President Muhammadu Buhari addressed shortages of rice, milk, and sugar by opening warehouses to make these items available.

Onanuga highlighted the government’s ongoing agricultural investments to ensure food availability and affordability. He emphasized the role of individuals in supporting these efforts.

Although President Bola Tinubu’s plans are not yet fully realized, Onanuga assured that Nigerians would see positive results from the government’s initiatives within twelve months. He acknowledged global cost-of-living crises and suggested that current hardships might be part of a global cycle. However, he affirmed the government’s commitment to easing these difficulties.

Onanuga also emphasized the importance of a strong relationship with the media for effective news dissemination. Odiete echoed this sentiment, stressing the need for accurate and responsible information, especially as Nigerians seek vital updates from their government.

Odiete expressed gratitude for the meeting and assured ACOE members were carefully vetted to maintain the association’s integrity.
