A contingent of 177 troops from the Martin Luther Agwai International Leadership and Peacekeeping Centre (MLALIPKC) has been deployed to tackle political instability in Guinea-Bissau.

This deployment includes 17 officers and 160 soldiers, all of whom have undergone rigorous training for their mission. During the graduation ceremony of Nigeria Company 3 of the Economic Community of West African Stabilisation Support Mission in Guinea-Bissau, Major General Ademola Adedoja, Commandant of MLALIPKC, emphasized the extensive training the troops received.

The training covered lectures on modern peacekeeping operations, specifically tailored to the security challenges in Guinea-Bissau.

“Political instability in Guinea-Bissau and its impact on peace and security were central to the training. Troops were provided with detailed knowledge of the mission area’s background, current situation, and mandate, along with mentally and physically demanding exercises,” Major General Adedoja explained.

Key components of the Pre-Deployment Training (PDT) included simulations of the operational environment in Guinea-Bissau, such as the occupation of Base Camp and Field Training Exercises. These simulations were designed to enhance the troops’ understanding and readiness for their mission.

Additionally, the training incorporated modern technologies essential for effective peacekeeping. This included the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and advanced navigation systems, which help the troops leverage innovation and adaptability in their operations.

Major General Boniface Sinjen, Chief of Operations of the Nigerian Army, highlighted the importance of Nigeria’s participation in the mission. He emphasized Nigeria’s commitment to helping Guinea-Bissau overcome political instability and institutional crises, which pose threats to regional peace and development.

“Guinea-Bissau faces significant challenges that require joint efforts for peace, democratic governance, and stability,” Major General Sinjen affirmed. “Through ECOWAS, Nigeria stands in solidarity with Guinea-Bissau, supporting efforts to strengthen governance and address security threats.”
