  • The bill seeks to amend three sections of the 1999 constitution

A bill proposing the creation of Etiti State in the South-East geo-political zone was read for the first time in the House of Representatives during Tuesday’s plenary session.

Sponsored by five House members—Amobi Ogah, Miriam Onuoha, Kama Nkemkama, Chinwe Nnabuife, and Anayo Onwuegbu—the bill aims to form the new state from parts of Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo states. Etiti State would comprise 11 local government areas from these five states, with Lokpanta as the proposed capital.

The bill seeks to amend three sections of the 1999 constitution by changing the number of states from 36 to 37 and adding Etiti to the list of states.

It also proposes transferring the 11 affected local government areas from their current states to the new state.
