  • Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo highlighted young ministers’ performance will influence future youth involvement in governance under President Tinubu’s administration
  • Tunji-Ojo emphasized technology-driven reforms, including a Contactless Biometric Solution for passport renewals, to improve efficiency and convenience

Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has stated that his performance, along with other young members of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, will pave the way for more youth involvement in governance.

During a courtesy Wednesday visit to the Daily Trust Newspapers headquarters, Tunji-Ojo praised President Tinubu for giving young people opportunities to serve. He discussed various reforms in his ministry, including the Contactless Biometric Solution, which will soon allow Nigerians to renew their passports from home.

Tunji-Ojo expressed his gratitude to the President for his supportive attitude towards youth, saying, “The President has given me, one of the youngest Interior Ministers, the responsibility for internal security and homeland enhancement. This shows his belief in the future. Other young ministers include those in Communications and Digital Economy, Industry, Trade and Investment, and the Minister of State for Police Affairs.”

He continued, “The best thing we can do for this generation is to show that we are ready for responsibility. Our performance will determine if more young people will get opportunities. If we succeed, it will open doors for others; if we fail, it will close them.”

Tunji-Ojo emphasized his commitment not to disappoint: “I am determined to ensure that the President’s decision to entrust internal security to a young man is justified. I aim to create a legacy I can reflect on even after office with a sense of fulfilment.”

Regarding the Contactless Biometric Solution, Tunji-Ojo explained, “We are close to completing this solution, allowing Nigerians to renew their passports without visiting the immigration office. Technology should make life easier, more secure, and more convenient. We have established a data centre for the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) for the first time in 61 years and are migrating data. Once this is done, no one will need to leave their house to renew their passport.”

He highlighted the importance of easing entry for investors on visa reforms, saying, “Visa policies are crucial for business. Countries like Saudi Arabia have relaxed their visa requirements to attract visitors who will spend money and boost the economy. We must balance this with national security, but effective immigration policies can attract investors and promote prosperity.”
